William J. Whiting is Wine Education Manager of Banfi Vintners of Old Brookville, NY, the U.S.’ leading wine importer and a major producer of premium offerings in Italy.
In his role, Mr. Whiting tailors and implements educational programs for the staffs of Banfi wholesalers as well as the sales personnel of key on-premise and off-premise accounts in metro New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. His presentations focus on the wines of Italy, Chile, Argentina and Australia, while his classroom venues vary from Banfi’s corporate headquarters in Old Brookville to the premises of local distributors, restaurants and wine shops.
He also helps to create tools to educate industry professionals, students in the hospitality field and the general public about wine. He keeps abreast of developments in the field through active involvement with such professional organizations as the Society of Wine Educators and the Dioneysian Society International.
Mr. Whiting is a grandson of John F. Mariani, Sr. who founded Banfi in 1919. Today, the firm is the country’s leading importer and produces premium selections on its Italian vineyard estate, Castello Banfi of Montalcino, Tuscany and Vigne Regale in Piedmont, Italy. Castello Banfi has won Italy’s highest wine honor four times – the Premio Gran VinItaly as International Winery of the Year and Italian Winery of the Year every year since 1994.
Mr. Whiting graduated from the University of Dayton. Prior to joining Banfi, Mr. Whiting was associated with Heidelberg Distributing Co. of Dayton, Ohio. He joined Banfi in 1997 as a sales manager in the firm’s Central Division where he was responsible for the company’s business in Missouri and Nebraska.
