Directions and Parking Information for Motor Coaches

Important Notice to Motorcoach Operators: 

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has instituted a weight limit on the Sakonnet River Bridge (Route 24) which requires a detour for all motorcoaches and vehicles over 18 tons visiting Newport from points east (Cape Cod) and points north (Boston/Plymouth).   This detour will be in effect until 2011. Please use the alternate routes listed below for driving to and from Newport.

Route 24 Southbound Detour:

I-195 to MA Exit 2, Rte. 136 South
Rte. 136 South to Rte.114 South, Mount Hope Bridge
Rte. 114 South Rte. 24

Route 24 Northbound Detour:

Rte. 24 North to RI Exit 2, Boyds Lane
Left on Boyds Lane to Rte 114, Mount Hope Bridge
Rte. 114 North Rte. 136 North
Route 136 North to I-195 East
I-195 East to MA Exit 8A for Rte. 24 South or Exit 8B for Rte. 24 North

Welcome to the Newport Mansions 

Welcome to the Newport Mansions of the Preservation Society. We hope you enjoy our world-renowned collection of historic house museums.  Your group’s visit will be more enjoyable by following our guidelines for motorcoach parking.

During scheduled open hours, the Preservation Society’s properties are marked by a green and white “open” flag at each entrance.

Important note: 
Idling of motorcoach engines is prohibited at Preservation Society properties.  Drivers who fail to turn off engines while their group is touring a property will be required to find alternative parking.  Your cooperation is much appreciated.

Also, by city ordinance, the boarding and disembarking of passengers on Bellevue Avene is prohibited.  Please see instructions below regarding passenger drop-off and pick-up and motorcoach parking at each property.


DIRECTIONS TO BELLEVUE  AVENUE, NEWPORT

(With the exception of Green Animals Topiary Garden and Hunter House, all properties are located on or directly off Bellevue Avenue. )

From Points South, (New York City, Mystic, CT)

1-95 North to RI Exit 3A (Route 138 East). Follow signs for the Newport  Bridge. Take first exit off bridge (Scenic Newport). Turn right at end of exit ramp. Go straight through first light. Turn right at second light America’s Cup Ave. Follow America’s Cup Ave. along waterfront, at the 7th light bear left up hill. At 2nd light, take right onto Bellevue Ave.

From Points North, (Boston Area)    SEE DETOURS ABOVE

Route 93 South to Route 128 South to Route 24 South to Route 195 West, returning to Route 24 South. Take Route 138 South. Follow directions “From Route 138 South”  below. 

From Cape Cod     SEE DETOURS ABOVE

Route 195 West to Route 24 South (Exit 8B) to Route 138 South.  Follow directions "From 138 South" below.

From Providence   SEE DETOURS ABOVE

Route 195 East to Route 24 South, to Route 138 South.  Follow directions "From 138 South" below.

From Route 138 South

After 8 miles, turn left at first light (Dunkin Donuts on your right) onto Route 138A (Aquidneck Ave.) At second light, turn  left. Bear right past beach and up hill on Memorial Blvd. At top of hill, turn left onto Bellevue Ave.

DIRECTIONS TO THE MANSIONS 

The Breakers, Ochre Point Ave. From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 1.1 mile on Bellevue Ave., turn left onto Ruggles Ave. Turn left onto Ochre Point Ave. Motorcoaches must drop off passengers on the right side of Ochre Point Avenue, and then
turn left into the motorcoach parking lot.  This entrance and parking area is for motorcoaches only, and is well marked.  The motorcoach parking lane runs along the perimeter of The Breakers parking lot; coaches should park on the left side of the parking lane.  Parking of motorcoaches on Ochre Point Avenue is no longer allowed, per city ordinance. 

The Breakers Stable & Carriage House, Bateman & Coggeshall Avenues From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 1 mile on Bellevue Ave., turn right onto Gordon St. Turn left at stop sign. Coach parking is prohibited at The Breakers Stable. Coaches must drop off passengers, then park at Rosecliff and return at a designated time for pick up.

Chateau-sur-Mer, Bellevue Ave. From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 9/10 of a mile on Bellevue Ave., turn left at entrance, continue past house to parking lot. Because of low archway near the exit, coaches must leave through the entrance.

Chepstow, Narragansett Ave. From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 6/10 of a mile on Bellevue Ave., Turn left onto Ruggles Ave. Turn left onto Ochre Point Ave. At the end of Ochre Point Ave., left onto Narragansett Ave. Chepstow is located on right-side (green open flag).  Coach parking is not permitted at Chepstow.  Coaches must drop off passengers at the entrance on Narragansett Ave then park at the Preservation Society's office, located at the corner of Narragansett and Bellevue Avenues.  Coaches then return to the entrance of Chepstow to pick up passengers.

The Elms, Bellevue Ave.  From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 0.35 of a mile on Bellevue Ave., Turn right onto Bellevue Court, adjacent to The Elms, and park in coach parking area at the end of the road.  Groups disembark and embark here and then walk to the front entrance of The Elms using the pathway. When finished with the tour, groups exit through the side entrance and follow the pathway back to the parking lot.  At no time shall the passengers board and disembark on Bellevue Court. Parking staff is on duty. 

Hunter House, Washington St. Coaches are not permitted in this area and should park at the Newport Visitors Center on America's Cup Ave. nearby.  Participants walk the short distance to Hunter House, approximately a five-minute walk.

Isaac Bell House, Corner of Bellevue Ave. and Perry St. Coaches are prohibited from parking, boarding or disembarking passengers at Isaac Bell House.  Coaches must park at The Elms lot where passengers disembark and walk down Bellevue Court, left onto Bellevue and left onto Perry St. to  entrance.

Kingscote, Bellevue Ave. & Bowery St. From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 2/10 of a mile and take second right onto Bowery St. Turn right into entrance. 

Marble House, Bellevue Ave.  Head 1.5 miles south on Bellevue Ave. Parking area is located opposite Marble House. Turn right into parking lot. Groups disembark and embark here, then cross Bellevue Ave. to entrance.

Rosecliff, Bellevue Ave.  From the intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., head south 1.3 miles on Bellevue Ave., turn left onto entrance.

DIRECTIONS TO GREEN ANIMALS TOPIARY GARDEN
(Approximately 10 miles and 25 minutes from Newport's Bellevue Avenue).  

From Bellevue Ave., Newport:  Heading North, at intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave., turn right and continue down hill. At first light, bear left. At second light continue straight onto Route 214. At 4th light, turn right onto Route 114 North. After 5.5 miles, turn left at light onto Cory’s Lane. Green Animals is located 7/10 mile on left.

From Points North: Route 24 South to Route 114 South. Cory’s Lane is first right after Route 24 South ends. At first set of lights, turn right onto Cory’s Lane. Green Animals is located approximately 7/10 mile on left.

Parking in downtown Newport
The Newport Visitors Center (800-326-6030) is located at 23 America’s Cup Ave. Free unlimited motorcoach parking is available here. Because of its close proximity to the downtown waterfront, shops and restaurants, it is an ideal spot for coaches to off-load and on-load. Information desk and Restroom facilities are available.
