History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.

The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

Open Mansions & Gardens for
Below The Breakers was a marvel of Gilded Age technology. Through a guide-led tour, see the boiler room, tunnel and basement, and learn how daily life was transformed by new wonders. Advance ticket purchase suggested.
For the first time in the 129-year history of The Breakers, the private third-floor family space occupied by generations of Vanderbilts is open for public tours.
A dragon in the dining room and a dolphin under the stairs – this tour will introduce children to this Gilded Age mansion from a unique and fun perspective. Included with regular admission.
Admission tickets can be purchased online or in person at the property. Multiple-house tickets are available at a discount price, and allow you to tour the houses on different days. Our house tour tickets never expire.
