Employment Opportunities
Full Time
Approximately 60 positions within The Preservation Society represent full time, year-round employment. These positions are based on a 40 hour work week, every week year-round, and include a variety of benefits, including access to health, dental and vision insurance.
Part Time
Most of the positions within The Preservation Society are part-time. These positions have a regular schedule which operates year-round.
Seasonal
Several of the positions at The Preservation Society are seasonal in nature. This means that periods of employment are directly tied to the seasons that our guests visit us. The main season begins in early April and continues on until mid-October.
Our secondary tourism season, from late October until year end, marks the approach of the winter season, when our employment need is at its lowest. In most cases, employment ceases at the end of the secondary season, but is often renewed at the beginning of the next season. Many Preservation Society employees plan their vacations around these gaps.
Internships
The Preservation Society seeks to inspire and promote an appreciation for the value of preservation to enrich the lives of people everywhere. Furthering our mission to protect, preserve, and present our collection includes fostering the next generation through internship opportunities.
An internship at the Preservation Society combines practical experience, collaboration with our professional staff, and exposure to various aspects of general non-profit operations. Interns will gain valuable skill sets, learn about workplace interactions, and gain further insight into their professional interests
The Role
Interns will work on various assignments related to department initiatives, ranging from administrative tasks and special projects, to research opportunities. Assignments are dependent on the Preservation Society’s needs and the intern’s individual strengths and interests.
The Preservation Society hosts interns from a wide variety of academic backgrounds who have an interest in preservation, art, history, museums, and business operations. The type of internships vary from department to department, and may be paid or for academic credit.
Eligibility
Open to current undergraduate juniors and seniors, current graduate students, or recent graduates (within one year) from a bachelor’s or master’s level program. Current freshmen and sophomores are not eligible to apply for internships but are welcome to join the Volunteer Community.

Your letter of interest should describe the type of internship for which you are applying, your qualifications, and desired learning outcomes.

Fellowships
The Preservation Society of Newport County offers annual Research Fellowships to scholars and emerging professionals. This opportunity is designed as a residential program providing dedicated time and resources for comprehensive projects that include scholarly research, public lectures, publication opportunities and other deliverables within specified areas relevant to the organization’s current needs in areas such as fine art, decorative art, material culture, landscape design, horticulture, social history and historic preservation.
