Founded in 1880, A.H. Davenport quickly became an important manufacturer of luxury furniture during the Gilded Age, securing important residential commissions including the White House. This close-looking tour explores an ongoing conservation survey and research focused on more than 80 pieces of furniture attributed to A. H. Davenport Co. (1880-1914) and commissioned by Ogden Codman Jr. for Cornelius Vanderbilt II to furnish the third floor of this summer residence.

Participants will join Furniture Conservation Research Fellow Isabella Hogan in examining some of the painted and varnished Davenport furniture located in the third-floor bedrooms belonging to three of the Vanderbilt children, Cornelius, Alfred and Reginald. Together we will explore how material, construction, utility and style contribute to our understanding of life at The Breakers during the Gilded Age.
