History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.

The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

With Laura Bergemann, Preservation Society Conservation Research Fellow
The Ladies Reception Room at The Breakers is one of America’s first period rooms. Featuring historic wall paneling from France, it is an outstanding example of a new form of interior that would come to define the American Gilded Age.
This tour, led by Preservation Society Conservation Research Fellow Laura Bergemann, will follow the room’s journey from aristocratic France to Gilded Age Newport and offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse into ongoing conservation research.
Laura Bergemann received her BS in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Science degree in Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works and Master of Arts degree in History of Art and Archaeology from The Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.
Laura excelled in several internship and professional roles including work as a Conservation Science Fellow at the Museum Conservation Institute, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; Conservation Science Intern at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, Indianapolis; Objects Conservation Intern at The Frick Collection, New York; and a Laboratory Assistant in the Department of Scientific Research, Sotheby’s, New York.
Laura’s skills include spectroscopy, chemistry techniques and biology techniques. She has comprehension in French, Italian, Latin, Old English and Middle Egyptian.

Founded in 1993, the Newport Symposium has been an annual convening of fine and decorative arts experts and enthusiasts from across the country and the world. Attendees listen to stimulating lectures, experience behind-the-scenes study opportunities and gather to network and discuss the future of our history.
