History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.

The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

Beginning May 1, 2023, the Preservation Society’s membership program enters a new era with expanded benefits and opportunities. The new membership program aims to foster a community of supporters who believe in furthering our mission to protect, preserve, and present the best of Newport County’s architectural heritage. We invite you to explore the new benefits included in membership such as additional guests, complimentary virtual programming, and other exciting level-specific benefits listed below.

Yes! You will receive a physical membership card in the mail a few weeks after we process your purchase, whether you joined by mail, online, or in-person at one of our properties. Present your card with a photo ID whenever you are using it at one of our properties. We do not currently have a digital membership card option.
NARM is the abbreviation used for the North American Reciprocal Museum Association. Previously only available to our Premium Level members, NARM membership allows you to have free or discounted admission at other institutions across the continent. Visit https://narmassociation.org/ for more information.
Thank you for being a member! Current members are automatically recognized in the new membership program. You will keep your current membership expiration date, and gain the benefits associated with the level “equivalent” to what you currently have. Benefit rollover excludes NARM, unless already included in your current membership level. See below for how your current membership will be incorporated.
